Nurse leaders are shaping the health of New England every day

When 2020 began, no one could have anticipated that the role of the nurse would become more essential than ever before. Nurse leadership has never been more important in guiding teams to deliver care during this worldwide health crisis. Our Foundation invests in nurses to help them become transformational leaders who can improve care in their communities.

Wherever there is a COVID-19 patient, there is a nurse

Since the start of the current worldwide pandemic, nurses have been called upon to lead us through the crisis. From the hospital setting, to long-term care, rehabilitation, and community and public health organizations, nurse leaders and their teams are leading the care to affected COVID-19 patients and their families. Though they continue to demonstrate teamwork, grit, and resilience, these leaders need support to uphold care excellence through future waves of COVID cases.

Celebrating the Year of the Nurse

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, honoring the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who led nurses and the organization of care for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War.

According to the WHO nurses play a critical role in health promotion, disease prevention, and the delivery of care in all care settings. The Year of the Nurse campaign amplified a public dialogue to showcase and celebrate the work of nurses, illuminating the challenging conditions nurses often face, and the need to invest in workforce development.

Celebrate Nurses with Our Special Commissioned Note Cards

ONL is so proud of every nurse’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We have commissioned a portrait collection of New England nurses created by artist and nurse, Amanda Lynne, RN. We have turned this amazing collection into Note Cards. Join us to thank nurses and let them know how much they mean to you.

Nurses have a direct impact on patient outcomes

The contributions of nurses go far beyond the image many have of a kind and compassionate caregiver. Nurses are also highly skilled experts who save patients’ lives through exacting science, novel innovation, and comprehensive care plans.

With more than 3.8 million registered nurses in the U.S., nurses comprise the nation's largest healthcare profession

Nurses are present in nearly every care setting and they spend more time with patients than any other member of the care team

Nurses are at the epicenter of COVID-19, triaging and testing patients, leading patient care, communicating with families, and coordinating care

Nurse leaders impact care quality, safety, and patient outcomes

In 2020, Americans rated nursing as the #1 most ethical and trusted profession for 18 consecutive years, according to Gallup

Research shows New England’s nursing workforce needs an influx of leaders to sustain care excellence
